Manulife launches six new mutual funds

Manulife Investments announced on Feb. 12 that it has launched five new Manulife ETF-based mutual funds and a new global credit fund.

Manulife Smart International Dividend ETF Fund invests in Manulife Smart International Dividend ETF (TSX: IDIV.B), which aims for income and long-term capital appreciation by investing primarily in a diversified portfolio of international dividend paying securities.

Manulife Smart Dividend ETF Fund invests in Manulife Smart Dividend ETF (TSX: CDIV), which aims for income and long-term capital appreciation by investing primarily in a diversified portfolio of Canadian dividend paying securities.

Manulife Smart Core Bond ETF Fund invests in Manulife Smart Core Bond ETF (TSX: BSKT), which seeks to earn the highest level of income consistent with the preservation of capital by investing primarily in a diversified portfolio of fixed income securities issued by Canadian federal, provincial, or municipal governments or corporations.

Manulife Smart Short-Term Bond ETF Fund invests in Manulife Smart Short-Term Bond ETF (TSX: TERM), which seeks to earn the highest level of income consistent with the preservation of capital by investing primarily in a diversified portfolio of short-term fixed income securities issued by Canadian corporations and may also invest in short-term fixed income securities issued by federal, provincial, or municipal governments in Canada.

Manulife Global Edge ETF Fund invests in Manulife Global Edge ETF (CBOE CAN: GEDG), which seeks to achieve long-term capital appreciation by investing primarily in a diversified portfolio of global equity securities.

Manulife Global Credit Opportunities Fund, sub-advised by Mawer Investment Management Ltd., invests in corporate bonds issued by global companies for investors seeking income, stability, and diversification.

National Bank renames global equity fund

National Bank Investments on Feb. 2 announced that effective Feb. 3, it is changing the name of NBI Global Diversified Equity Fund to NBI SmartData Global Equity Fund. Effective Feb. 3, 2026, the fund’s investment strategies will be modified to reflect the investment approach and process of its underlying funds. The fund’s investment objective remains unchanged.

SLGI renames two low vol funds, adds ETF series

SLGI Asset Management on Feb. 2 announced the launch of two new exchange-traded series .

SLGI MFS Blended Research Low Vol Global Fund – ETF Series (TSX: SBLG) aims for long-term capital appreciation with low volatility by investing primarily in a diversified portfolio of equity securities of issuers located anywhere in the world, or indirectly by investing in mutual funds (including exchange-traded funds) that invest primarily in such securities.

SLGI MFS Blended Research Low Vol International Fund – ETF Series (TSX: SBLI) aims for long-term capital appreciation with low volatility by investing primarily in a diversified portfolio of equity securities of issuers outside Canada and the United States, or indirectly by investing in mutual funds (including exchange-traded funds) that primarily invest in such securities.

Note that effective Jan. 12, 2026, the Sun Life MFS Low Volatility Global Equity Fund was renamed SLGI MFS Blended Research Low Vol Global Fund, and the Sun Life MFS Low Volatility International Equity Fund was renamed SLGI MFS Blended Research Low Vol International Fund. Their investment objectives and strategies remain unchanged.

Fidelity debuts global long/short fund

Fidelity Investments Canada on Jan. 29 debuted its Fidelity Global Opportunities Long/Short Fund and ETF series (TSX: FLSE), a globally diversified long/short strategy that invests across geographical regions, sectors, and market caps. The fund blends long and short positions to help navigate a range of market conditions.

RBC terminates low vol EM fund

RBC Global Asset Management on Jan. 28 announced that it will terminate the RBC QUBE Low Volatility Emerging Markets Equity Fund effective on or about March 30. The fund is closed to purchases effective immediately. RBC GAM said in a release that the decision to close the fund was driven by its limited growth potential.

SIMA releases fund industry 2025 statistics report

The Securities and Investment Management Association (SIMA) on Jan. 28 released its 2025 Annual Statistics Report, which provides data and comprehensive analysis of mutual fund and ETF sales and assets under management. This year, the report was expanded to include key indicators of Canada’s public equity and debt markets, placing investment fund activity within the broader capital markets context.

“This report is the definitive industry source for investment fund assets and sales data,” said Ian Bragg, SIMA’s Vice-President of Research and Statistics. “By expanding this year’s report to include key capital market indicators, we can see investment fund activity alongside developments in Canada’s public equity and debt markets, helping to situate fund trends within broader market conditions.”

Mutual fund assets reached record levels in 2025, reflecting strong market performance and sustained investor demand. Mutual fund assets under management rose to $2.53 trillion by year end – an increase of 12.7% year over year. ETF assets also reached an all-time high, reaching $713 billion and growing 37.8% from the previous year.

Sales activity was robust across both mutual funds and ETFs. Mutual fund net sales totalled $40.5 billion in 2025 – more than double the 2024 level – while ETF net sales reached a record $125.8 billion, marking the first year annual ETF inflows exceeded $100 billion. Together, these results underscore the continued growth of investment funds as the preferred vehicle for Canadian investors.

SLGI renames two funds

SLGI Asset Management Inc. on Jan. 26 announced that effective April 1, it will change the names of two funds as follows:

Sun Life BlackRock Canadian Composite Equity Fund will be renamed Sun Life State Street Canadian Equity Index Fund.

Sun Life BlackRock Canadian Universe Bond Fund will be renamed Sun Life State Street Canadian Bond Index Fund.

There are no changes to the investment objectives or investment strategies of the funds.

Global X launches tokenization ETF

Global X Investments Canada on Jan. 22 announced the launch of its Global X Tokenization Ecosystem Index ETF (TSX: TOKN), an equity ETF designed to provide exposure to the growth of companies driving the development and adoption of tokenized financial infrastructure.

The fund tracks the Mirae Asset Stablecoins and Tokenization CAD Index that provides exposure to the growth of companies that derive meaningful economic exposure from the tokenized asset market, including stablecoin issuers, tokenization platforms, trading and distribution venues, and infrastructure providers for payment, settlement and custody.

Invesco sells Canadian fund management agreements to CI

Invesco Canada Ltd. announced on Jan. 13 that it has entered into a definitive agreement to sell the management agreements relating to its Canadian fund business to CI Investments Inc., operating as CI Global Asset Management. Under the terms of the agreement and subject to the receipt of all necessary consents and approvals, CI GAM will become the manager and portfolio manager of the Invesco Canada family of retail mutual funds and exchange traded funds, and CI GAM will enter into a long-term arrangement with certain Invesco affiliates to continue to provide sub-advisory services in respect of certain funds.

Mackenzie launches two new equity value funds

Mackenzie Investments on Jan. 13 debuted two new value funds.

Mackenzie Global Value Fund aims for long-term growth through a disciplined, value-oriented approach to global equity investing. The fund aims to uncover attractive opportunities often missed by conventional investment strategies by tapping into a broad range of companies across both developed and emerging markets.

Mackenzie US Mid Cap Value Fund targets the often-overlooked mid-cap segment of the U.S. equity market, capturing investible opportunities from companies typically underfollowed by mainstream analysts. The fund seeks to uncover inefficiencies and capitalize on mispriced assets using rigorous research and proven valuation principles.
